Empty Malls: What's Really Happening?

January 9, 2026 | Other Activities

The phenomenon of increasingly empty malls is not without reason. Consumer shopping patterns are slowly shifting from in-person shopping to online shopping through e-commerce. This change is not just a passing trend, but rather a transformation in how consumers interact with commerce.

Data shows that the regions/provinces with the highest e-commerce activity are dominated by areas with strong digital infrastructure and population density, such as West Java, East Java, and Central Java.
Furthermore, the top five goods and services sold via e-commerce reflect the strengthening of daily needs and digital lifestyles.
In terms of channels, e-commerce sales media are dominated by instant messaging, marketplaces, and digital platforms, illustrating how businesses are adapting to the new ecosystem.

Empty malls do not mean commerce is dead, but rather that commerce is changing.

Amidst this dynamic, the key to survival is one: remaining adaptive and keeping abreast of developments in commerce in Indonesia.
